The gardens of Hampton Court Palace are among the most celebrated in England, spanning over 60 acres of formal gardens, parkland, and riverside walks. From the world-famous Maze to the meticulously restored Privy Garden, they represent over 500 years of horticultural ambition.
The Hampton Court Maze is the most famous hedge maze in the world. Commissioned by William III around 1700, it covers a third of an acre and features half a mile of winding paths bordered by towering yew hedges.
The Privy Garden was the private garden of the monarch, accessible only to the King or Queen and their most intimate circle. The current garden is a meticulous restoration of its appearance in 1702, during the reign of William III.
Planted in 1768 by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, the Great Vine at Hampton Court is the largest and oldest known grape vine in the world. Its main trunk is over 12 feet in circumference, and its branches extend over 120 feet.
The Great Fountain Garden is not only a place for quiet walks. In December it becomes the setting for the Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre, with stalls from independent producers and live music against William III's formal avenues.
