Ghosts & Legends of Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace is widely regarded as one of the most haunted places in England. Over five centuries, visitors and staff have reported ghostly apparitions, unexplained sounds, and eerie presences within its ancient walls.

The Screaming Ghost of Catherine Howard

The most famous ghost of Hampton Court is that of Catherine Howard, the fifth wife of Henry VIII. In November 1541, Catherine was confined to her apartments while charges of adultery were investigated. According to legend, she broke free from her guards and ran screaming through the gallery towards the Chapel Royal.

Jane Seymour's Ghost

Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife, died at Hampton Court on 24 October 1537, just twelve days after giving birth to the future Edward VI. Her ghost has reportedly been seen gliding through the cobbled courtyards carrying a candle.

The Grey Lady of Hampton Court

Dame Sybil Penn served as nurse to Prince Edward and remained a loyal servant to the Tudor monarchs throughout her life. After her tomb was disturbed during church renovations in 1829, staff began hearing the sound of a spinning wheel coming from behind a wall.
